New Haven native Lauren Ambrose got her acting start in Off-Broadway theater, then picked up several supporting guest roles on the popular television crime drama LAW & ORDER. Her film debut came with a role as a student in the Kevin Kline comedy IN & OUT. Other early credits include Denise in the popular teen comedy CAN’T HARDLY WAIT and Florence “Chicklet” Forrest, in the cult classic PSYCHO BEACH PARTY. Ambrose was then cast as the unforgettable Claire Fisher on HBO’s popular, critically acclaimed dark comedy SIX FEET UNDER, a role she played for several seasons, garnering two Emmy nominations for best supporting actress and winning several shared Screen Actors Guild awards for Outstanding Ensemble.

In 2006, Ambrose made her Broadway debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Clifford Odets’ 1935 masterpiece AWAKE AND SING! In 2007, she starred as Juliet in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of ROMEO AND JULIET, a widely acclaimed mounting described by one critic as “intensely moving.” She recently returned to Broadway in Eugene Ionesco’s EXIT THE KING, starring opposite Susan Sarandon and Geoffrey Rush. In 2009 she voiced the monster KW in Spike Jonze’s popular adaptation of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, the Maurice Sendak children’s classic.

In addition to her award-winning work as an actress for film, stage, and television, Ambrose is a classically trained opera singer who studied at Massachusetts’ well-known Tanglewood Institute. She performs frequently with her band, “Lauren Ambrose and the Leisure Class,” known for its self-described “unique blend of ragtime Dixieland red hot gypsy jazz.”
