Story behind the story of Grassroots

Godfather, Princess Bride, Charlotte’s Web, Fight Club and Grassroots. What do all these movies have in common? Book to film adaptation. And they are in my top 25. Now I don’t know much about writing an adapted screenplay but as a self-proclaimed movie buff I know that most attempts to live up to an epic book just plain suck. Movies of this genre have a lot to prove. Being faithful to the author’s concept while offering an innovative approach. Grassroots’ final cut is not finished yet, but I can tell you I love what Stephen Gyllenhaal’s got up his sleeve.

So what’s the story behind the story of Grassroots? Phil Campbell, wrote Zioncheck For President: A True Story of Idealism and Madness in American Politics. The story is about what happens when Grant Cogswell, an eccentric activist, enlists Phil Campbell’s help as his campaign manager to win a seat in Seattle’s city council. Phil is a former journalist at a Seattle newspaper, The Stranger, with no experience managing political campaigns. Grant has big ideas, alot of passion and zero chance of winning. Together, these two take on Richard McIver, the incumbent (brilliantly played in the movie by Cedric The Entertainer) and run a campaign that’s as GRASSROOTS as you can get! That’s pretty much all I’m giving away. If you want to know more, read the book people!!

Joel David Moore plays Grant Cogswell and Jason Biggs plays Phil Campbell, the author of the book. Jason (my celebrity crush) gave a compelling performance as Phil Campbell. I know i’m constantly gushing about everyone in the Grassroots family (from right : Jason Biggs, Stephen Gyllenhaal, Phil Campbell and Joel David Moore) but I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse. The REAL Phil Campbell is stopping by our Facebook page today to answer your questions and give you all the details about what really happened during that crazy campaign… so take advantage and get the scoop!!!
